Exhibition Itinerary
The Shoah Memorial (Platform 21) is in the Stazione Centrale area located below the railway tracks, an area originally used for loading and unloading postal railcars. It is accessed directly from via Ferrante Aporti. Between 1943 and 1945 it was a place where hundreds of deportees were loaded onto convoys headed for concentration camps.
The permanent exhibition itinerary begins with the Hall of Testimonies: it is formed by six rooms where video interviews of testimonies of the survivors of deportation are shown; each room is equipped with a short inclined metal ramp (slope of 3%, width: 92 cm, handrail on the left) and inside the room there are 15 seats (seat height: 44 cm) and a space reserved for a wheelchair user.
On the wall there are panels where the facts related to this place and the stories of the protagonists are told.
A ramp (slope of 2%) allows you to reach the space that houses the "Track of the Unspecified Destination", where there are four original wagons that can be crossed via short ramps on the sides (length: 103 cm - slope of 7%). After crossing the railcars, or following an aluminum footbridge, you enter the second track where about twenty plates show the dates and destinations of the trains. Along the wall of the track is the “Wall of names”, where you can read the 774 names (for the first 2 trains) of those who were deported from the Milan Central Station to the extermination camps. This part of the itinerary ends with the “Place of Reflection", a space in the form of a truncated cone that can be reached by a helical ramp (seat height: 43 cm).
On floor -1, reachable by a helical staircase (27 steps) or by elevator, is the Auditorium, a space dedicated to conferences and debates.
On the lower floor, the project provides for the creation of the "Room of memorials", the archive of the above library (a three-storey structure in steel and glass) also under construction as well as the bookshop that will be on the mezzanine floor.
