Foodtech

The Foodtech sector is based on the use of innovative digital technologies during the various step of the supply chain, with the purpose of connecting the tradition of the Mediterranean diet, the Italian food excellences and digital innovation push. Its objective is also improving the environmental sustainability, enhancing the food quality and making it accessible for as many consumers as possible.

In 2015 Milano hosted the World Expo 2015 themed “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”: the event aimed at raising awareness on environmental sustainability, innovation, energy and resource saving as the only way to ensure the common well-being and food safety at the global level, through the collaborative action of communities, States, private companies.

Thanks to the World Expo 2015, Milano is still worldwide recognized as Italy’s major hub for agri-food and functional foods industry, in fact the City Region has the highest number of startups in the Foodtech sector (33%). Since Expo 2015, in fact, Milano hosts Seeds&Chips - The Global Food Innovation Summit, which is the world’s flagship food innovation event, where to discuss themes, models and innovations that are changing the food sector.

The foodtech reputation is growing fast because of its high innovation level, which makes Milano appealing to the startup world.

Moreover, in Milano was born the first campus dedicated to foodtech and sustainability by Talent Garden in 2019, giving visibility to the Italy as a key agribusiness center (14% of Italian GDP based on food economy). Finally, in 2019 was launched in Milano the first global FoodTech Accelerator, which every year selects 10 of the best startups worldwide to boost food innovation during a 15-week program aimed at building and accelerating industrial pilot projects.
