International students return to Milano universities in droves

All Milanese universities have restarted 100% in presence.
All university dorms in the city are nearly full with student residents. After two years of distance learning, with the resumption of classes in all Milanese campuses, international and out-of-town students are repopulating the city.
The number of foreign students is steadily increasing all over the city. At Statale, out of 60,038 students enrolled, 39,000 from outside the Milano metro area, and 4,647 of them are international student (7.7%).
At Bicocca, which has seen an increase of over 3,000 students, there are now 35,433 students enrolled, with 1,700 international students (4.7%). As for Cattolica, there are 30,770 students this year, of which 2,066 come from abroad (6.7 %).
Politecnico has now reached the highest number of international students, there are 6,451 foreign students making up 14% of the total student population of 43,628. But highest percentage of international students at large universities is to be found at Bocconi University, a private institution: out of 14,891 students enrolled, 1/5 of students are international and over 3/4 are out-of-towners. Medical studies in Milano are heavily international at Humanitas University, a private university, where 43% of its 1,600 students come from abroad, mostly studying med tech.
If we look at what first-year students have chosen to study, at Statale there has been a push among freshmen towards STEM subjects, especially Chemistry, Computer Science, Pharmacology, Biotechnology.
There is also a growing interest in environment and sustainability degree programs, as well as globalization studies and international relations. For instance, at Bicocca University, Corriere della Sera reports, the Environmental Sciences and Technologies program has 32% more first-year students.
Other well-attended degree programs are Materials Sciences and Geology, followed by Physics, Mathematics and Statistics, "where there is perfect gender equality", because, as Bicocca Dean Giovanna Iannantuoni is keen to note: "More and more young women are focusing on science degrees".
