UNWTO and Milano sign Letter of Intent

It is the first post-Covid international visit of the agency’s Secretary General, Pololikashvili

Milano, July 3rd 2020 – UNWTO’s Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili met today with Mayor Sala to sign a letter of intent which sets Milano’s tourism future towards Sports and Sustainability in light of the 2026 Winter Olympics. Italy is the first country visited by the Agency’s secretary general in the aftermath of Covid’s lockdown.

The meeting’s focus

The meeting, which was also attended by Roberta Guaineri, Deputy Mayor for Sport and Tourism of the City of Milano, was based on the shared goal of sustaining the city’s tourism sector with a focus on sports, aiming at a more sustainable and equitable growth. The letter of intent, which was signed at the end of the meeting delineates the scope of the collaboration between the City and the Agency, which involves sharing data and best practices to support the tourism sector relaunch. Mayor Sala declared:

 

I’m truly honored of the Secretary’s visit. His presence today shows the international and strategic role Milano has played and will continue to play in the tourism sector at the global level. UNWTO’s choice of putting sports and sustainability at the centre of the tourism strategic development is forward-thinking.

 

The Secretary General Pololikashvili said:

Milano can offer an innovative and resilient answer to the tourism sector. The city is ready to take up new challenges. I’m sure we will be able to create a more sustainable and socially responsible way of promoting tourism.
