The Master’s Degree, organised by the Civica Scuola di Cinema with the support of Netflix, was created with the aim of training one of the key figures most in demand in the audiovisual sector in the field of TV serial production: the Development Executive.
The consumption and production of TV series, especially following the introduction of VoD services, has increased exponentially in the last few years, placing the series as the leading genre in terms of innovation and quality. It is estimated that around 2000 new series/seasons are produced around the world each year (source: Séries Mania).
Netflix, working in around 190 markets, has played a key role in this phenomenon as an innovation driver, giving scripted a major role in its entertainment offering, and building a wide and varied offer that is based not only on Hollywood productions, but on stories from a whole host of countries, from Turkey to Korea, from Mexico to the Middle East, from Japan to Italy, all made available to international audiences.
As for Italy, the latest data available, from the second report on Italian audiovisual production (source: APA, 2020), indicates that international co-productions from 2018 to 2020 grew by 150% on the previous three-year period.
In Italy, Netflix launched five new seasons of Italian series in 2020, announcing its intention to double that number by 2022.

The Master’s Degree in “Series Development - Scripted Development and Creative Production” stems from the need to provide new nationally and internationally competitive professionals who can operate in the new market that includes, in addition to traditional players, the new streaming VOD services.
This is therefore the first course:
- Geared towards innovative local products that have the ambition to be enjoyed by an international audience (with a view to a global and no longer just domestic market).
- Focused on the product development stage (rather than on conception, prerogative of scriptwriters and creators, or on Physical Production) and the serial scripted audiovisuals (rather than cinema or unscripted television).
Netflix, wishing to encourage the growth of professionals linked to the world of scripted development, has decided to support the Master’s degree for its first three editions. Netflix professionals will teach at the course; Netflix will support the communication of the master. Above all, Netflix will offer full and partial scholarships in order to give the opportunity to participate to all talents, without limitation, who would like to enter this world and are unable to afford the registration fee.
Both Scuola Civica and Netflix are committed to supporting the value of inclusion and wish to offer equal access conditions, bearing in mind values of diversity and multiculturalism, even to those in a position of socio-economic difficulty.
The Master’s degree will have the maximum freedom and wealth of contributors, allowing room both in lectures and internships to all producers, whether Netflix suppliers or not, and all broadcasters/ audiovisual service providers including direct and indirect competitors of the platform, without limitations and constraints.
