Originally from Verona, starred chef Diego Rossi is a welcome presence in Porta Romana thanks to Trippa, a hugely successful traditional trattoria in Via Vasari 1, the latest stop of a culinary journey through kitchens and restaurants in various parts of Italy.
A stone's throw from the Porta Romana stop on the M3 yellow line, Trippa is in heart of the neighborhood’s food district that includes other eating venues that are much appreciated by the Milanese: Giulio Pane e Ojo, Fratelli Torcinelli, Pastamadre, Autem, Yapa, Giannasi, Marlà, Longoni.
For Diego, Porta Romana is not simply the neighborhood that welcomed his establishment, it is one of highlights of Milano, maintaining a village aspect and a community feeling in a fast-changing metropolis.
Diego's first stop is gourmet pasta. His tour of the neighborhood starts after with a lunch or dinner at at Fratelli Torcinelli (Via Muratori 6), an informal and welcoming Apulian trattoria, or Pastamadre (Via Bernardino Corio 8), a small, intimate, family-run restaurant that does its own fresh spaghetti and linguine.
At Porta Romana, within 500 meters you can wander between a restaurant and a café, a pastry shop and a wine shop for all palates.
Diego Rossi recommends, among the many local drinking dives, Bella Milano (Via Lazzaro Papi 19), a cocktail bar and bistro run by Calabrese guys: a place where it is pleasant to sip a drink in the shade of the trees in the outside terrace.
Teatro Franco Parenti (Via Pier Lombardo, 14) – A theater that combines classic and popular drama, with a program of carefully curated shows stimulating art, culture and the intellect.
And in the summer, Bagni Misteriosi, the drinking lounge by the modernist pool next to the theater, creates a unique atmosphere thanks to vibe brought by the people chatting and frolicking there.
Il Cinemino (Via Seneca, 6) – A very intimate arthouse movie hall, with essay screenings of experimental and critically acclaimed films, which also doubles as bar and hangout, especially favored by the twentysomethings.
Among the many local shops and boutiques, Diego says Ciasmo (Via Orti, at the corner of Via della Commenda, M3 Crocetta), a concept store where you can find vintage mid-century furniture reinterpreted with particular fabrics, as well design objects, accessories, shoes and handmade clothing, especially for women.
