April is the month when spring blooms in Milano, even where you least expect it. Beautiful fresh colours, the scents of nature and lots of outdoor art, thanks to Milan Art Week 2022 and the Miart art fair.

As per tradition, every year, ample space is given to public art in Milano: check out the 3 new masterpieces installed in the CityLife art park.

Don't miss Milano's 10 open-air masterpieces.

Enjoy joining the guided tours of the neighbourhood murals, looking upwards to spot original and incredible facades. High up on some buildings, you will be fascinated discover complex large-scale "nests" by Japanese artist Tadashi Kawamata until July 23rd: made from wood, these are four site-specific installations in some interior spaces and on the facades of the Grand Hotel et de Milan, the Cariplo Foundation Congress Centre and the Cortile della Magnolia, Palazzo di Brera.

Other major art initiatives are opening up in the city.

On the photographic scenario you might like to delve into the fascinating travel narrative dedicated to Ferdinando Scianna at Palazzo Reale, Maurizio Galimberti’s emblematic images of the last century at the Diocesano or the MIA Photography Fair, making a welcome return for its traditional spring edition.

From April 22nd, La Chapelle’s giant visionary images of 50 miracles for a new world will be on display in an unprecedented exhibition at Mudec.

At the end of March, the Milanese "temples" of contemporary art - Fondazione Prada and Hangar Bicocca - respectively inaugurated two new exhibitions, Useless Bodies? and Steve McQueen’s Sunshine State

And until May 14th, the FOG Triennale performing arts project invites esteemed international performance artists to Milan with shows connected to the Triennale exhibitions and events.

New outdoor masterpieces in the City Life art park

Springtime in Milano means enhanced commitment to outdoor public art: the ArtLine project will inaugurate three new works at CityLife on April 1st, adding to the already existing installations in the large city park: “Atrio dello sguardo sul futuro” by Mario Airò, “Padiglione Rosso” by Alfredo Jaar and “Guardiane” di Kiki Smith.

Also, on April 1st in Piazza Sempione, OutPut will present a series of performances in the public space by Riccardo Benassi and Michele Rizzo, with the support of the Fondazione Marcelo Burlon, from 18:00 to 21:00.

Photography Passion

This is the perfect period for cultivating your passion for art and photography in the many city-wide events and venues.

From April 28th to May 1st, the MIA fair dedicated to photography and video art returns to its spring venue at the Superstudio Maxi headquarters in via Moncucco.

Until May 1st, at the Diocesan Museum, Maurizio Galimberti’s images reinterpret the story of the last century through characters, expressions and gestures, while Ferdinando Scianna's black and white journey narrative will be shown at Palazzo Reale until June 5th.

From April 22nd to September 11th, you can admire the giant format visionary photographs by the American photographer-director David LaChapelle at Mudec Museum of Cultures.

Zanuso and Mendini at ADI: design and architecture converse with modern and postmodern

ADI Design Museum places two great protagonists of Italian design and architecture face to face: Marco Zanuso and Alessandro Mendini, from March 8th to June 12th, 2022.

An unprecedented game of references and contrasts is stimulated by the multiple works placed one in front of the other: on the one hand Zanuso’s modernist themes and, on the other, Mendini’s postmodernism, two different yet both complete visions united by the ability to offer adequate solutions to new ways of thinking and to contemporary tastes.

The inaugurations at the Milanese temples of contemporary art

Contemporary art is the protagonist of the Milanese spring with two eagerly-awaited inaugurations on March 30th, in conjunction with Milano Art Week and Miart.

"Useless Bodies?", one of the most extensive thematic investigations ever carried out by the Prada Foundation thanks to the duo of artists Elmgreen & Dragset.

The exploration of the condition and perception of the body - a theme dear to the artist duo - in the post-industrial era seems to lead to the conclusion that, to the benefit of digital life, our physical presence is losing its centrality so much so that it is almost superfluous. Will this actually be the case?

Pirelli Hangar Bicocca, the other important venue dedicated to contemporary art in Milano, has also inaugurated - in collaboration with Tate Modern in London - the Sunshine State exhibition: an ad hoc exhibition project and a new selection of works from artist Steve McQueen (not to be confused with the world-famous American actor in the 60s and 70s), one of the most important contemporary artists, film-makers and screenwriters.
