From 1 to 7 April 2019, Art Week returns for an entire week dedicated to modern and contemporary art with inaugurations, extraordinary openings, guided tours, special initiatives and many exhibitions to visit, open in the various exhibition venues of the city: from Palazzo Reale to the Hangar Bicocca, from the PAC to the Museo del Novecento and to Palazzo Pusterla, headquarters of the Banca Generali, involving foundations and galleries, public and private institutions.

 

A very rich week - almost a non-stop party - that revolves around the prestigious international miart fair and that accompanies the Milanese and the increasingly numerous tourists visiting Milano in a real journey to the centre of creativity.

MiArt 2019

5 - 7 April 2019, fieramilanocity

From 5 to 7 April 2019, miart is back, the prestigious international fair of modern and contemporary art organized by Fiera Milano that combines the past and present of creativity. From the art of the beginning of the last century to the works of the most recent generations, miart engages the visitor on a journey in which history and experimentation interact with each other.

Linda Fregni Nagler. HANA TO YAMA

Banca Generali Private

The exhibition dedicated to Linda Fregni Nagler, one of the most interesting protagonists of Italian art, is dedicated to Japanese photography and presents two different sets of photographs: one representing street vendors of flowers and the other representing scenic views of Mount Fujiyama, two typical subjects that recur in the production of the so-called School of Yokohama. December 17th, 2018 - April 7th, 2019.

Renata Boero. Kromo-Kronos

Museo del Novecento

The Kromo-Kronos exhibition, by the Genoese artist Renata Boero, proposes works that arise from a particular experimentation involving the interaction between natural pigments and organic elements. In the vast and heterogeneous production of the artist there is constant contact and reference to nature, an essential part of his pictorial poetry. 2 April - 23 June 2019

The Last Supper after Leonardo

Exhibition at Fondazione Stelline

Leonardo keeps on influencing contemporary art, as proven by Anish Kapoor, Wang Guangyi, Yue Minjun and Nicola Samorì. These are some of the artists who have been invited to interpret the most sacred and iconic painting of our western culture in a contemporary key. 2 April – 30 June 2019.

Anna Maria Maiolino. O AMOR SE FAZ REVOLUCIONÁRIO

PAC - Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea

Anna Maria Maiolino, an artist of Italian descent currently living in Brazil, creates works which are teeming with life. Through performances, sculptures, videos, photographs and drawings, Maiolino explores human relationships and our difficulties in communicating and expressing ourselves somewhere on the border between human physicality and our intimate and spiritual sphere. 2 March - 9 June 2019.

Sheela Gowda. Remains

Hangar Bicocca

The Remains exhibition is Sheela Gowda’s first solo show in Italy. She's one of the leading names in contemporary art in India. In addition to a new production, the exhibition will present a wide selection of works she has made from 1996 to the present time, including watercolours, prints, and site-specific installations. The latters are distinguished by a large variety of materials—such as hair, organic substances, cow dung, incense, and natural pigments—and will be displayed in connection with the iconic architecture of the Navate at Pirelli HangarBicocca. April 4 - September 15 2019.

  • Saturday, April 6th: walk through the exhibition with Sheela Gowda and Jessica Morgan, director of DIA Art Foundation in New York, at 11:00

LIZZIE FITCH I RYAN TRECARTIN: WHETHER LINE

Fondazione Prada

Commissioned by Fondazione Prada for its Milano venue, Whether Line is the large-scale multimedia installation, conceived by Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin that represents the first output of a creative process begun in late 2016, investigating the perpetual promise of “new” terrain and the inherent instability of territorial appropriation. April 6 - August 5 2019

Ibrahim Mahama. A Friend

Fondazione Nicola Trussardi

Fondazione Nicola Trussardi presents A Friend, a monumental installation specially conceived for the two neoclassical tollgates of Porta Venezia by the Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama. The artist will wrap Porta Venezia with jute sacks: creating a second skin, the artist will generate a new identity for the two structures, underscoring their historical origins and symbolic functions as places of trade and exchange.  April 2 - 14 2019.

De-Coding. Alcantara in the Sale degli Arazzi

Palazzo Reale

In the De-Coding exhibition. Alcantara nelle Sale degli Arazzi, hosted in the prestigious halls of Palazzo Reale, the episodes of Ovid's Metamorphoses, narrated on the Tapestries, are de-codified and then re-narrated with the use of Alcantara® as a support material.

JEAN AUGUSTE DOMINIQUE INGRES and art in Napoleonic Europe

Palazzo Reale

The exhibition at Palazzo Reale displays for the first time the modernity of Ingres’s artistic production in the European cultural context between 1780 and 1820, with a special focus on the major role played by Milano in Napoleonic Europe. March 12 - June 23 2019.

Morbelli 1853 - 1919

GAM - Modern Art Gallery

The exhibition pays tribute to the artist Angelo Morbelli, one of the protagonists of the great divisionist season in Lombardy between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, on the occasion of the centenary of his death. The review documents some of the most important aspects of the artist's production, such as the technical experimentation and the elaboration of some themes dear to him to which the sections of the course are dedicated. 15 March - 16 June 2019.

Anj Smith. The Mountain of the Muse

Contemporary art at Poldi Pezzoli Museum

The exhibition shows three works by Anj Smith created especially for the occasion, a series of drawings and a personal reinterpretation of some furnishings in collaboration with Fornasetti. His work explores a wide range of genres and subjects, from portrait to landscape to still life. 3 April - 12 May 2019.

STORIES IN MOTION. ITALIANS IN LIMA, PERUVIANS IN MILANO

MUDEC - Museo delle Culture

“Milano Città Mondo” (Milano World City) is a multiyear project created by Museo delle Culture (MUDEC) in collaboration with the City’s Office for Networking and Cultural Cooperation. Every year, in-depth studies focus on one of the numerous international communities living in Milano. Between February and July 2019, the theme of the survey is Peru and the Peruvians of Milano, the city’s fourth largest community of migrants, and the largest among the communities from the American continent. 16 March - 14 July 2019.

Teresa Maresca. Song of Myself

Acquario Civico

The Teresa Maresca exhibition, Song of Myself, brings into dialogue the pictorial series of the artist, inspired by the meditation on nature and by the contents strongly rooted in American transcendentalist thought, with the poetry of Walt Whitman.

 

  • Tuesday, April 2nd: opening for the public from 18:00 to 20:30

Hans Josephsohn

Fondazione ICA Milano

ICA Milano hosts the first solo show in Italy of Hans Josephsohn, one of the greatest sculptors of the second half of the 20th century. 24 March - 2 June 2019.
