Pre-Raphaelites. Love and Desire

At Palazzo Reale iconic masterpieces from Tate Britain

Palazzo Reale
Piazza del Duomo 12

The exhibition on the Pre-Raphaelites at Palazzo Reale from June 19 to October 6, 2019 brings the iconic masterpieces of the London Tate Britain collection to Milano: from the Ophelia by Millais to the fascinating red-haired women - Aurelia. Fazio's lover - and to the medieval scenes by Dante Gabriel Rossetti as Dante's dream of Beatrice's death, up to fantastic evocations as the enchanted walk on the river by Lady of Shalott by John William Waterhouse.

It is an avant-garde spirit that animates the group of artists and intellectuals gathered in London in the second half of the nineteenth century around Dante Gabriel Rossetti and John Everett Millais: freeing British painting from the conventions of society and from dependence on old masters, drawing on a new art and a new lifestyle, drawing inspiration from medieval and Renaissance Italian painters and poets and exhibiting a faithful reproduction of nature.

Like contemporary artists, the Pre-Raphaelites travelled the world impacting on ideas, media and markets, exploring connections between art, design, poetry and music.

Thanks to a special event, some masterpieces come out of the halls and come to life with the Tableaux vivants, to become a theatrical representation of carefully reconstructed fabrics, music and lights: Tuesday 18, Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 June at 21:30 in Piazzetta Reale.
