IN THE SHADOW OF THE MORO. THE SALA DELLE ASSE

Castello Sforzesco, Museo d’Arte Antica, Sala delle Asse

Leonardo’s Sala delle Asse is once again open to visitors after the removal of scaffoldings that were used for the restoration works. A catwalk offers a close view of the so-called Monochrome and of the preparatory drawings that have surfaced on the walls. A multimedia installation guides visitors through the interpretation of the grandiose work conceived to celebrate Ludovico il Moro.

THE SALA DELLE ASSE. LEONARDO BETWEEN NATURE, ART AND SCIENCE

A selection of nature drawings by Leonardo da Vinci and by other great maestros of the Renaissance reveal the close iconographic and stylistic relations with Sala delle Asse and, particularly, with the recent findings on the wall under the plaster layer.

LEONARDO IN MILANO

Castello Sforzesco, Museo d’Arte Antica, Sala delle Armi

A virtual tour guides the visitor along places associated with Leonardo in Milan, underscoring, after five centuries, the social composition and the aspect of urban spaces, palaces, gardens and sacred buildings. A georeferenced visual map allows to identify what has survived of those places.

EXHIBITION AT MUSEO DELLA SCIENZA E TECNOLOGIA LEONARDO DA VINCI

On stage at the Museum a fascinating exhibition in which newly displayed Leonardesque historical models parade next to frescoes by 16th century Lombard painters from the Pinacoteca di Brera. Unusual combinations of art and science celebrate the 500 years from the death of Leonardo da Vinci.

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF NATURE

Exhibition at Palazzo Reale

Leonardo modified our perception and representation of nature. And nature itself is the subject of the beautiful complex of twenty paintings making up the so-called Sala del Grechetto, to which the exhibition is dedicated. A unique instance in the tradition of Italian painting, both for dimension and for the amount of portrayed animal species.

Interactive laboratory at Museo Nazionale Scienza e Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci

At the Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia (Science and Technology Museum) an interactive laboratory is dedicated to Leonardo. In the new i.lab visitors can discover Leonardo as an artist who loved experimenting as well as an engineer dealing with the construction sites of the Renaissance. Exploring first hand how Leonardo worked might stimulate everyone to find new ways of acting and thinking.

THE LAST SUPPER IN PICTURES. CINEMA AND IMAGES TELLING LEONARDO’S LAST SUPPER

MIC – Museo Interattivo del Cinema, Gallerie d’Italia and chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie

A cinema festival, an exhibition and a series of meetings with free admission to let the Last Supper “out” of its conservation place, allow people to know it better and check its influence along the years.
The festival hosted in several venues, consists of about ten films (documentaries on the restoration, famous films citing the iconography of the masterpiece and precious archive films of which one copy only exists). The exhibition, starting in May 2019, is hosted in the spaces of the Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano and tells the story of how the museum evolved and the thrilling story the frescoed wall, from the aerial bombing of 1943 to the big restoration campaigns of the 20th Century. To finish off, a series of four encounters and a day of study on the Last Supper and its restoration on the background of 20th-Century Milan.

THE LAST SUPPER AFTER LEONARDO

Leonardo keeps on influencing contemporary art, as proven by the artists who have been invited to revisit the most sacred and iconic painting of our western culture in a contemporary key. Key figures on the contemporary art scene, who come from different cultural traditions, namely Anish Kapoor, Robert Longo, Masbedo, Nicola Samorì, Wang Guangyi, Yue Minjun, re-read the theme of the Last Supper in an original dialogue between East and West.

LEONARDO. THE MACHINE OF IMAGINATION

The Enciclopedia Italiana Treccani Institute celebrates Leonardo with an exhibition project that speaks of his genius in the language of contemporaneity. The Studio Azzurro artists ensemble creates an immersive and interactive itinerary peopled by Leonardo’s machines turned into narrative devices thanks to state-of-the-art technologies.

Leonardo horse project

IPPODROMO DI SAN SIRO SNAI AND VARIOUS LOCATIONS

Leonardo's Horse, a bronze statue created by Nina Akamu on drawings by Leonardo da Vinci and kept at the Snai San Siro Racetrack, is the protagonist of an important promotion project: the Leonardo Horse Project.

The inauguration, on April 10th, unveils the 13 scale reproductions of the Horse, interpreted by a pool of internationally renowned artists and designers according to their own style. The Design Horses, exhibited at the Racecourse during the Design Week, will then peacefully invade the City of Milano until  the end of October, placed in different locations linked to the history of the Genius Engineer. An increased reality App accompanies the public to discover the statue and the works, in an experiential and immersive journey, rich in content.

An anthological exhibition, in collaboration with the Museo della Battaglia e di Anghiari, dedicated to the studies that Leonardo carried out on the equestrian figure will also be happening at the Racecourse.

LA MISURA DEL PARADISO. Leonardo alla corte del Moro

Docufilm by Fondazione Milano - Civica Scuola di Cinema L. Visconti

Leonardo five hundred years later. Thousands of pages have been written about him as an artist, an engineer and a scientist. There is yet a lesser known part of his artistic activity. The documentary wishes to tell the story of Leonardo as an entertainer: a musician, a scenographer, a costume designer for parties, tournaments and banquets at the Milanese court.

THE FICTION OF POWER: DURER’S TRIUMPH’S ARCH FOR MAXIMILIAN OF ABSBURG

An exhibition centred on the gigantic engraving work of the Triumphal Arch of Maximilian I, by Albrecht Dürer, exploring for the first time the relationship with figurative culture in Milan in Leonardo’s days. The event foresees a focus on the bond between the Emperor’s court and that of Ludovico il Moro.

Leonardo made his most significant studies and drawings on anatomy in Lombardy, between Milan and Pavia, and he intended to represent in ‘figure’ the entire structure of the human body. One of his forerunners was Guido da Vigevano, the author of  the essay Anothomia designata per figuras (1345 c.).

The play analyzes the master/pupil relationship between Leonardo da Vinci and Francesco Melzi. Divided into 5 acts, it will include the presence of Michele Placido as Leonardo da Vinci and of Brenno Placido as Francesco Melzi. The piece valorizes Melzi’s effort to treasure and pass on the immense artistic legacy of the great Renaissance Genius to humanity.

Lucio Fontana. Hommage to Leonardo

Exhibition at Museo del Novecento

The exhibition is focused on the iconography of the horse, on the prancing horse and on the horse and rider, so frequent in 20th-century art. Starting from these topics, the aim is to create a parallel between a segment of the artistic research of Lucio Fontana, especially from the Thirties, with the work of Leonardo da Vinci.

The setting consists of three dark rooms, illuminated only by black light, thanks to a new printing technology with fluorescent toners.

Franco Lucillini's photos are a great chance to closely admire – in very high resolution – a great number of Leonardo's works. The choice covers Leonardo's entire lifespan and it is very useful to integrate and complete a visit to the Last Supper, which is located very close by.

Vaprio e la Valle dell’Adda: lo sguardo di Leonardo

Exhibition at Custode delle Acque, via Alzaia Sud 3, Vaprio d'Adda

An exhibition itinerary exploring the bond between Leonardo and the Adda river territory through the sketches and studies he realised there. Those precious sheets came back home after the Master's death thanks to Francesco Melzi, the beloved pupil to whom Leonardo left «tutti et ciaschaduno li libri» (each and everyone of the books). Of the numerous sketches that reached the present day  spread in the various Codexes, the most important for the area of Vaprio d’Adda, its surroundings and Leonardo's studies on water have been selected.

Mural at Ponte delle Milizie Alzaia Naviglio Grande

The artist Elisabetta Mastro wanted to pay her personal tribute to the great Renaissance inventor with one of her murals, in which his masterpiece (The Last Supper) is revisited in a new, personal interpretative key, with an essential trait, emphasis on colour and subtle play, segmented by infinite form-suggested nuances.

DA VINCI EXPERIENCE

Exhibition Sala degli Arazzi - Palazzo Marino

The presentation of a great work of art reproducing the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, interpreted and elaborated by the artistic duo DAMSS, using exclusively recycled fabrics. A very demanding subject which helps viewers open their minds to profound meditation. The materials have been modelled in order to obtain 3D effects of differing weight or lightness according to the personalities of the different characters. The work consists of three panels which in sequence reach the same dimensions of the original.

Un’opera di pittura digitale realizzata a seguito di un lungo decorso creativo e di ricerca sul tema e sui personaggi dell’Ultima Cena. 
Costruita visivamente a partire dal punto fissato da Leonardo, nel momento in cui Cristo pronuncia le parole “uno di voi mi tradirà”. L'opera immortala la reazione emotiva dei vari apostoli, messi a nudo, a seconda dei loro differenti caratteri.

Festival Meetings 2019 - THE SUSTAINABLE FLIGHT!

On the hype of the celebrations for the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci, the Festival is promoting a series of concerts, activities and meditations inspired by Leonardo’s cultural legacy aimed at pupils from schools, many of which are inserted in the SMIM network of Milan.

The Feast of Paradise

Show at Parco Sempione - Piazza del Cannone, Castello Sforzesco – Cortile delle Armi

A fountain with games of water and light animates Piazza del Cannone: on droplets of nebulized water, laser images tell of Leonardo's passion for the construction of floodgates and dams. The second moment of the show analyses the history of the relationship between Leonardo and Ludovico Il Moro - always in a very evocative way - and the place where they met and worked, the Sforza Castle. A screening with voiceover will guide the audience along this journey, telling a rather unknown, yet extraordinary story: Festa del Paradiso, a scenic machinery that Leonardo invented on the occasion of the wedding between Gian Galeazzo Sforza and Isabella d’Aragona.

The Department of Education of the Municipality, together with the Scuola Civica di Cinema Luchino Visconti, released a video starring actor Germano Lanzoni (Milanese Imbruttito) and Luca Caricato (an expert of Leonardo’s life and work), to promote in schools the many opportunities to enjoy events related to Leonardo as well as his works.
