Triennale di Milano
Viale Emilio Alemagna 6

The XXII International Exhibition of Triennale di Milano, open from 1 March to 1 September 2019, is entitled Broken Nature: Design Takes on Human Survival. It is an in-depth investigation into the bonds uniting people to the natural environment, links that over the years have been deeply compromised, if not completely destroyed. The XXII edition of La Triennale di Milano, analyzing various architectural and design projects, explores the concept of reconstituting design highlighting objects and strategies, on different scales, reinterpreting the relationship between human beings and the context in which they live, including both social that natural ecosystems.

The XXII Triennale di Milano consists of a thematic exhibition, in twenty-two international participations, in the installation titled The Great Animal Orchestra, in the special exhibition La Nazione delle Piante.

With Broken Nature, La Triennale di Milano reaffirms its decision to continue the tradition of the International Exhibition, the twenty-first edition of which was held in 2016 after a twenty-year hiatus.

THE THEMATIC EXHIBITION

The thematic exhibition consists of four works specially commissioned to international designers. The commissioned works have been entrusted to Formafantasma (Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin), to Neri Oxman and to his research group Mediated Matter Group of MIT Media Lab, to Sigil Collective (Khaled Malas, Salim Al-Kadi, Alfred Tarazi and Jana Traboulsi), a collective based in Beirut and New York, and Accurat, research and innovation company in the field of data-driven design, with offices in Milan and New York (project led by Giorgia Lupi and Gabriele Rossi).
These projects propose creative approaches aiming to correct the self-destructive course of humanity but also to think differently about our relationship with the environment and with all the species present on the planet, including human beings. In many cases, the works are the continuation of a body of work begun earlier and want to encourage designers to consider their practice as a long-term activity. In addition to the commissioned works, the thematic exhibition includes a selection of one hundred projects from the last three decades, examples of design, architecture and restorative art from all over the world.

THE GREAT ANIMAL ORCHESTRA INSTALLATION

The thematic exhibition also presents the installation The Great Animal Orchestra, commissioned by the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris and created by the bio-acoustic expert and musician Bernie Krause and the English collective United Visual Artists (UVA) on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name presented in 2016. The Great Animal Orchestra offers an immersion in the heart of the sounds of nature, offering a visual and sonic reflection on the need to preserve the beauty of the animal world.

INTERNATIONAL PARTICIPATIONS

The thematic exhibition is accompanied by 22 International Participations, promoted by institutions and universities considered as international excellences, as well as by numerous Governments. International Participations offer a diversified proposal in terms of themes, perspectives, contexts and origins, which gives an account of the complexity and the different cultural traditions. A special pavilion is the one of the City of Milano, which inaugurates the new headquarters of the Urban Center at the Palazzo dell'Arte entrance with the exhibition Milano 2030.

NATION OF PLANTS EXHIBITION

The XXII Triennale di Milano also includes the exhibition La Nazione delle Piante, curated by Professor Stefano Mancuso, which starts from the assumption that humanity, in order to avoid a catastrophic future, must look at plants in a new way, using them not only for what that they have to offer, but for what they can teach us. Plants have existed on Earth for much longer than humans, have adapted better, and will probably survive our species. The Nation of Plants reveals its nature through a spectacular and fascinating imaginary, a learning path through an immersive experience and multimedia contents.
