All about your driving license.
Driving licenses issued by countries belonging to the European Union or the European Economic Area are equivalent to Italian driving licenses.
However, it is advisable to request the conversion or recognition of validity for EU licenses as well, to expedite procedures related to renewal or replacements in case of loss, theft, etc.
The procedure is intended for drivers holding a driving license issued by an EU country or the European Economic Area who register residence in Milano.
Those who have an EU driving license with an expiration date set by EU regulations (Article 7 paragraphs 2 and 3 of Directive 2006/126/EC) can drive legally until the expiration date.
Once the validity period ends, it is necessary to convert the foreign license at an Office of the Civil Motorization. After conversion, the foreign document is withdrawn and returned to the issuing country.
Conversion can also be requested before the expiration date. In this case, the driver will receive an Italian license with the same expiration date as the foreign one, or if they provide a medical certificate for renewal, an Italian license with a new validity period according to the expiration dates in Italy.
The request must be made at an Office of the Civil Motorization.

For holders of a non-EU driving license, it is possible to drive vehicles for which the license allows for up to one year from acquiring residency. After one year, to be able to drive vehicles on Italian territory, it is necessary to convert the license. This is possible if the issuing country has signed reciprocity agreements with Italy (visit the full list at this link).
Holders of non-convertible licenses, if they wish to reside in Italy for more than one year, have no alternatives: they must retake the driving exams. Non-EU citizens wishing to register a vehicle in Italy must have residency in Italy and possess a residence permit or a receipt for the renewal or initial issuance of the document.
The theory exam for the license is written, on a computer, and the questions are in the form of true or false quizzes in Italian. You can request translation into French or German, and if you have difficulty reading, you can ask for audio support, meaning you can listen to the questions through headphones.
The request must be made at an Office of the Civil Motorization.
