An Entry Visa is an authorisation issued by the Italian consular authority, after a clearance process, that allows you to travel to Italy for a purpose, e.g. for studying.

Most study visa are of the Schengen type, allowing you to enter all Schengen area countries. 

You may apply for a Student Visa by making an online appointment to go in person to the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your place of legal residence not more than 90 days before the start of study term in Italy.

Do I need a Visa to come and study in Milano?

Generally speaking, if you are a Non-EU citizen and you plan to stay more than 90 days to study in Italy, you will need to ask for an Entry visa.

Universitaly pre-enrollment

If you are requesting a visa for studying in Italy, you have to pre-register on the Universitaly platform.

Follow the guidance of your destination University in Milano. 

Get an appointment for your Visa

You may apply for a Student Visa by making an online appointment and then in person to the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country of legal residence no more than 90 days before the start of study term in Italy. 

There may be multiple Italian Embassy and Consular Offices in your country of legal residence.  

Please consult the il Visto per l’Italia page of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs9 to find out: if you need a visa for your specific case, the required documents, where to apply, the costs of processing the visa application, website, and contact details for the Italian Consulate in your assigned Consular District. 

You will not be able to obtain your Student Visa at other Embassy or Consulate locations than the one competent for your area. 

• When making a reservation online at the Consulate or Embassy, an appointment may not be available for one to two months, so it is recommended that you go online to book your in-person Visa appointment as soon as you know the dates of your stay, allow at least approximately 8-10 weeks ahead of your desired departure date. 

• Some Embassies and Consulates may have differing processes and requirements for the Student Visa application process. Some may use external agencies to collect applications. Please consult their website or contact your designated Embassy or Consulate to verify these requirements and ensure that you have all required documentation in advance of your appointment.  

Documents Required

You will need to provide to the Consulate:

• Entry Visa Application Form13  

• ID document valid for travel (such as a Passport) which expiration date is set at least three months after the end of your stay for which the visa is requested.14 

• A passport-type color photo 

• Proof of living accommodation in Italy (e.g. a hotel booking or a declaration of hospitality). 

• Document certifying adequate financial resources for the duration of your Visa. 

• Proof of health insurance valid in Italy for the duration of your planned stay (see Step 2 for further information). 

• Proof of enrolment or pre-enrolment in the course of study to be followed in Italy (i.e., your university admission letter).  

• The Embassy or Consulate will endorse this document at your in-person appointment. Please save the original document as you will be required to provide it in Milano as part of your application for the Residence Permit/ Permesso di Soggiorno (see Step 3). 

Cost of Visa:  € 50.00

Valid Until:  

• There are variable options about the duration of Visa validity; you will specify the length of time needed as part of your application. Please note: Passport or other valid travel document must be valid for at least another three months after the expiration date of the requested Student Visa. 

Proof of health coverage

You must bring proof of internationally valid health insurance coverage, effective for the same duration as per your Visa term, to the Italian Embassy or Consulate when applying for your Student Visa. 

If you do not have existing internationally valid health insurance, a number of private providers offer qualified coverage for Italy that can be applied for and obtained in your home country. The price you pay will depend on your health insurance policy, but differently from the public health coverages (where you access to health services has no limits), private insurance usually does not cover all conditions and has a maximum ceiling on disbursements. 

The language of the health insurance certificate can be English or Italian. 

Pick up your passport with your Visa

On the day of your appointment, the Consulate will give you the instructions for picking up your passport. The visa is a sticker on one of your passport pages.
