When are the next elections for the European Parliament?

June 6-9, 2024. The 27 countries that compose the European Union vote on different days. For example, the Netherlands has elections on Thursday the 6th, and France has elections on Sunday the 9th. In Italy, European elections will take place on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June 2024.

You won’t get to vote again on Europe until 2029, so it's important to use your vote!

Why is important to vote?

When you vote, you choose representatives to the European Parliament, the legislative power of the EU which gets to ratify the European Commission and its President, depending on the Europe-wide coalitions emerging from the vote (so-called Spitzkandidat process).

The European Parliament first gathers in Strasbourg but then is usually assembled in Brussels, were MEPs vote on issues ranging from labor and welfare, to agriculture and foreign affairs: decisions that affect every citizen's lives!

What are the main groupings in the European Parliament?

EPP (Christian-democrats), S&D (Social-Democrats), Greens EFA, Renew Europe (Liberals), the Left, Nationalist Conservatives (ECR), and Identity & Democracy (Hard Right).

How many MEPs will be elected?

In 2024, 720 MEPs will be elected by over 400 million voters. 76 is the number of MEPs for Italy.

Who is eligible to vote?

Every adult EU citizen. If you can’t vote in your country of origin and live in another EU member state, you can either vote at your consulate for the national candidates of your country, or vote along Italian voters for Italian candidates at normal polling stations in your municipality of residence in Italy. You can only vote once in each European election.

How can I vote in Milano for my Country candidates?

Yes, get in touch with your Consulate that will set up polling stations for the European election.

They will give you information on how to register, where to vote and the date and time of voting.

Also, if you are not a registered resident in Milano, it's the only way to vote.

How can I vote from Milano for the local candidates?

How to enroll in the electoral list: deadline 11 March 2024

Conversely, if you are a European citizen residing in Milano and wish to vote for local candidates to the EU Parliament, you need to send an application to the electoral office of Milano (or the Mayor of your municipality) and you will be enrolled as voter in its designated electoral list. The deadline is 11 March 2024.

Your Tessera elettorale

After the confirmation that you have been registered, you can go with the confirmation message and your ID or Passport to any Anagrafe office to obtain your electoral card. 

It's better to ask for the card with anticipation, as soon as you get your registration.

The electoral card contains your data and the address and number of the voting poll near to you where you are enlisted to vote. On Election Day, show up at the poll with your ID and electoral card, it will be stamped as a receipt of your vote.
