By blending modernity and tradition and creating visually striking spaces, Italian architect Gae Aulenti (1927-2012) is widely known for her work in Italy and abroad.
She designed some of the world’s great buildings, such as Paris’s Muséed’Orsay and Tokyo’s Italian Cultural Institute.
She also left marks of her genius in the city where she did her entire career: Milano.
Her life and work is described in Annarita Briganti’s book “Gae Aulenti. Riflessioni e pensieri sull’Architetto Geniale”.

Gae Aulenti at Triennale Milano: a retrospective tribute

Our journey begins with a retrospective tribute to Gae Aulenti, which will take place from June to October 2024 at Triennale Milano.
This iconic building hosts the Milanese institution devoted to modern architecture and design and is the perfect setting to immerse yourself in the architect’s innovative spirit. Explore her ground-breaking designs, from iconic buildings to interior spaces that continue to captivate the world. The Triennale Design Museum is home to more than 300 objects that recount the story of Italian design, also through the reconstruction of household interiors through the epochs.

Piazzale Cadorna: Aulenti’s spectacular transformation

Next, our itinerary brings us to Piazzale Cadorna, where Gae Aulenti’s genius shines particularly brightly. Commissioned to restyle the building of the train station and create a pedestrian square in last few years of the 20th century, the architect’s work completely transformed the space in a way that looks timelessly modern to this day.
Marvel at the spectacular sculpture at the center of the square created by Swedish artists Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, representing a giant threaded needle sewing together the city. Piazzale Cadorna act as a testament to Aulenti’s ability to seamlessly merge art and architecture.

Casa Aulenti: exploring the architect’s personal space

Next, our journey takes us to Brera, Milano’s art district, where Casa Aulenti, the architect’s house and studio, awaits. Step inside the world of Gae Aulenti and gain insights into her creative process and design philosophy. This intimate space provides a glimpse into the mind of a visionary architect.

The Gae Aulenti Archive is open by appointment. For any information: contact@archiviogaeaulenti.info.

Former headquarters of Politecnico di Milano: a place of academic significance

Milano’s oldest university, Politecnico di Milano, holds a special place in Gae Aulenti’s journey as she was one of the first women to study and graduate from this institution. Today, Palazzo del Senato hosts Milano’s State Archives, a fitting tribute to the university legacy. A short walk from here, you can enjoy an afternoon of shopping in the Fashion District around Via Montenapoleone.

Piazza Gae Aulenti: a contemporary hub of innovation

Our final destination is Piazza Gae Aulenti, named in honor of the architect herself upon its inauguration in 2012.
The plaza is a showcase contemporary and futuristic design, and a hub for international shopping and trasnational corporations. It’s also the place where the Milanese like to meet, an alternative to Piazza Duomo.
Walking towards the Vertical Forest towers and the Isola alternative neighborhood, there is the BAM – Biblioteca degli Alberi Milano (literally “the library of trees”) a public park that is perfect for a green escapade, making it a coveted stop for tourists and locals alike.
