YesMilano FDI Dispatch

Your monthly wrap-up to invest in Milano

The FDI Unit of YesMilano aims to assist expanding foreign companies exploring Milano’s fertile business environment and settlement opportunities. We have more than 200 international firms in our pipeline (32% from the US, 11% Canadian, 10% British, 7% Scandinavian, 7% French).
In terms of industries, these reflect the current orientation of the Milano Metro Area towards capital investment in the Life Sciences (73 companies assisted), Fintech, since the Milanese financial marketplace leads Europe for startups in micropayments and mobile banking (68 firms welcomed), ICT, with 29 digital tech companies engaged, Food & Agritech (18 firms), and Cleantech geared to energy efficiency, environmental restoration, and decarbonization of the economy, which are also the City of Milano’s green policy targets.

The new 1 mln sqm scientific park MIND - Milano Innovation District, located in the northwest of the city, is launching an acceleration program for EU-based startups. Initiated by Berkeley Skydeck Europe, the accelerator of the University of California at Berkeley, in partnership with Cariplo Foundation and Lendlease, the launching coincides with the opening of the EU headquarters of SkyDeck in the MIND innovation district. European startups have until February 28 to apply. Winners will go to Silicon Valley for a first 3-month acceleration phase to leverage SkyDeck’s extensive network of advisors, mentors, and VCs to grow their business before heading back to Milano for the last 3 months held at MIND.

Macrogen Europe, the subsidiary of the South Korean company that is among the top 5 genome sequencers in the world is opening a new office and laboratory space at the Unimi Foundation, the technology incubator of the University of Milano. This expansion into the city’s booming genomics sector was assisted by the YesMilano FDI team with dedicated location scouting and administrative information.

As for digital finance, we are collaborating with Fintech District, the gateway to the Italian Fintech ecosystem, to continue our successful Soft Landing Program, the program to support foreign fintechs in landing into the city throughout all the phases of the investment process.

We not only welcome entrepreneurs and potential investors to our city, but we go abroad, either virtually or physically, to explore emerging trends and show the potential of Milano as business destination and area of investment.
In mid-January, we took part in the JP Morgan Health Care Conference, where we met with 8 foreign companies operating in the Life Sciences. And at the end of March we’ll participate in Bio Europe Spring, the global marketplace for biotech and pharma, which this year will be solely digital, but will return in presence next year.
