Music director Riccardo Chailly inaugurates the 2024/2025 Season with a new production of La forza del destino - The Force of Destiny, his ninth Verdi work at La Scala, directed by Leo Muscato. 

This dramaturgically complex opera was created in 1862 in St. Petersburg and brought to La Scala in its definitive version in 1869 with the creation of the famous Symphony. 

La Forza del Destino features some of Verdi's most memorable melodies. It was previously part of the La Scala programme in the 2001 Verdi centenary season - when it was brought to Milano by the Mariinsky Theatre ensembles of St. Petersburg - but it has not been performed by the La Scala Orchestra and Chorus since 1999.

Prima della Scala will be screened live, with free admission, in numerous locations around Milano (admission free unless otherwise indicated), to unite all opera lovers in the city, novices and enthusiasts alike. 

In chosen locations, the La Forza del Destino screening will be preceded by listening guides to the Italian opera (in Italian), curated by Accademia Teatro alla Scala.

Aula 38, Scenografia at the Accademia di Brera – Piazzetta di Brera 

Professor and musicologist Fabio Sartorelli will invite the audience to join him on a journey to reveal aspects that characterize La Forza del Destino, this year’s protagonist of the La Scala Premiere. 

He will elucidate the plot, characters, musical elements, famous editions and directors of the past, as well as narrating anecdotes relating to the opera, its genesis and its critique.  The narrative will be enhanced by arias from the opera, inaugurated on December 7th, performed by Soloists from La Scala’s Academy of Improvement accompanied by the pianoforte.

Free admission is subject to availability. Doors open at 6:00 pm.

A series of performances and meetings, from  December 3rd to 7th, will allow for a deeper appreciation of La Forza del Destino and Giuseppe Verdi.

Once again, music and art come together in harmony for the Prima Diffusa 2024: exhibitions, performances and workshops offer the chance to discover a new and surprising side to La Forza del Destino. 

This year, a film festival has been added to the Prima Diffusa series of events featuring films that tell the story of the power of destiny.
