Surrealism and the omnipotence of dreams with Max Ernst

Palazzo Reale - From October 4th, 2022 to February 26th, 2023

Along with his contemporaries - René Magritte and Salvador Dalì - Max Ernst was one of the major exponents of Surrealism, the avant-garde movement that originated in France in the late 1910s and early 1920s. The artist’s work spanned 7 decades, and the retrospective at Palazzo Reale - from October 4th, 2022 to February 26th, 2023 - shows over 200 of his works and reveals every aspect of this painter, sculptor, engraver, poet and art theorist’s corpus. Be enthralled by the paintings, sculptures, drawings, engravings, books and jewels, and be fascinated by the visions created in Ernst's unbridled imagination.

Do not miss his Oedipus Rex masterpiece that, in 2022, celebrates 100 since its creation and is fully representative of the surrealist world. Another masterwork, L'angelo del focolare (The Triumph of Surrealism) depicts a gigantic colourful monster that envisioned the chaos that was spreading over Europe in 1937: not by chance, in the same year Picasso painted Guernica, an iconic representation of the horrors of war.

Fight for justice with Andrea Bowers. Moving in Space Without Asking Permission

GAM Galleria d'Arte Moderna - From September 15th to December 18th, 2022

“Dismantle patriarchy”, “Empower the women around you”, “Fight like a girl”: we have heard these socially relevant messages in defence of women's rights so many times recently. The exhibition at the GAM Galleria d’Arte Moderna until December 18th, 2022 invites us into the world of Andrea Bowers, an artist who has been committed to this struggle through her work for many years.

It is the fourth edition of the Furla Series project, the programme of exhibitions brought to the GAM by the Furla Foundation since 2017, and it is the first show dedicated to the American artist by an Italian institution.

Impactful artworks in various, and sometimes surprising, materials that strive to convey Bowers’ political commitment in the feminist sphere. Not to be missed are the neon installations and the Feminist Fans artwork composed of dozens of coloured fans laid methodically on the ornate floor, which give new a dimension to the splendid rooms in Villa Reale. An age-old, yet ever new, struggle for women's emancipation.

Explore the world in series with Andy Warhol: The Advertising of the Form

Fabbrica del Vapore - From October 22nd, 2022 to March 26th, 2023

The King of Pop Art returns to Milano after a 10-year absence: 300 works at the Fabbrica del Vapore will span Andy Warhol’s entire artistic career.

The exhibition journeys through the symbolic objects of mass consumerism, such as the iconic Campbell's Soup Cans, to the portraits of the ‘60s celebrities - from Marylin Monroe to Che Guevara - the Ladies & Gentlemen series of the ‘70s dedicated to drag queens, up to the ‘80s when his relationship with the sacred became predominant.

Amongst original paintings, unique works, historical serigraphs, drawings, Polaroids, photographs and other real memorabilia, do not miss the Commodore Amiga 2000 computer with its digital illustrations, the BMW Art Car painted by Warhol, and his films to watch with 3D glasses.

Experience space with Bruce Nauman. Neons Corridors Rooms

Pirelli Hangar Bicocca – From September 15th, 2022 to February 26th, 2023

An exhibition entitled Neons Corridors Rooms may seem bizarre but the works by Bruce Nauman, one of the world’s most prominent living artists, invite visitors to explore over 5,000 sq mt of incredibly unique spaces. At the Pirelli Hangar Bicocca, until February 26th, 2023, this exhibition is designed to be experienced and explored with the body as well as with the mind.

Visitors are invited to pass through rooms illuminated by coloured neon lights, squeeze through a narrow gap in a metal cage, marvel at tables and chairs hanging from the ceilings or discover entire walls of neon signs that create always-new messages.

Nauman investigates the spatial-body relationship and the profound interaction between art and life with the body as an instrument.

So… interact and be guided through these corridors towards a new concept of space.

Delve into Unknown Unknowns. An introduction to mysteries at the Triennale Milano 23rd International Exhibition

Triennale Milano - From July 15th to December 11th

Not a solo show, but a constellation of exhibitions at the Triennale Milano spaces for the 23rd International Exhibition. One of the largest and most important international events dedicated to design and architecture; various exhibitions throughout the Palazzo dell'Arte address the theme of the unknown, questioning the mysteries of the known world.

Not to be missed is the thematic exhibition Unknown Unknowns, curated by Ersilia Vaudo, astrophysicist and Chief Diversity Officer at the European Space Agency. Meet the famous images and portraits: Richard Avedon. Relationships

Palazzo Reale – From September 22nd, 2022 to January 29th, 2023

The power of photography is the focus of this exhibition at Palazzo Reale until January 29th, 2023. With his iconic images, Richard Avedon, one of the world’s most illustrious fashion photographers, introduces the visitor to glimpse the intimate character of each subject behind his portraits, to enter an eternal world captured in an instant of true poetry.

The 100 images on display span Avedon's entire career, his innovative approach revolutionised the aesthetics of fashion photography. Instead of just portraying the models he created a real world within which the woman’s personality became the protagonist.

Some of the greatest characters of the twentieth century are portrayed: from the Beatles to Bob Dylan, Michelangelo Antonioni, Allen Ginsberg, Sofia Loren, Marylin Monroe, the Dalai Lama and Andy Warhol.

All the images are in black and white, with the exception of the section dedicated to the Versace campaigns, alongside firstly Gianni and then Donatella, which manage to convey all the disruptive force of the Italian fashion house's collections.

Look into the eyes of the history of the 1900s.

PAC Padiglione d’arte Contemporanea - From November 22nd, 2022 to February 12th, 2023

The PAC - Contemporary Art Pavilion in Milano is the perfect venue to encounter the world through contemporary art. Continuing with its focus on international countries, from November 22nd, an exhibition will be dedicated to the Japanese artists of the 2000s: Japan. Body_Perform_Live.

It investigates the trends that involve the bodies of the artists, the elements of the performance and on the relevant dynamics.

The invited artists will reflect on how these bodies and performances are connected to society, the vision of life and death and how social politics expresses itself through artistic disciplines.

A reflection on mankind through a culture that is far away, but perhaps not too distant.
