Kate Crawford and Trevor Plagen - "Training Humans"

Art consideration on Artificial Intelligence systems

From
To
Osservatorio Fondazione Prada
Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

In order to understand Kate Crawford and Trevor Paglen art perspective, it is necessary to clarify the concept of “training images” - actually the whole catalogue of pictures and videos useful to educate Artificial Intelligence together with all photos taken by the social networks and video surveillance systems. In past times those images must be collected in a different way - just think about prisoners’ mugshots - on the contrary today websites and apps get pictures from users directly and easily.

“Training Humans” does not want to offer a dystopian vision of this theme, but it seems to be a concrete and accurate artistic consideration on future systems. Beyond allarmisims, the main risk depends on “moral prejudice” - a concept Crawford theorizes when he studies these technical tools. It is important to start reorganizing all ideas about this variable and uncertain topic. This art exhibition seems to be completely “new” with an important “historic” value.
